Representative image.Godrej Consumer Products (GCPL) has initiated a media review process for its integrated media account, valued at approximately Rs 700 crore. Madison is the incumbent media agency for GCPL.Harshdeep Chhabra, Head of Global Media at Godrej Consumer Products, stated, “At GCPL, we consistently seek opportunities to enhance cost efficiencies in our media strategy and spend. As part of this ongoing process, we are conducting a transparent and objective media pitch to select an appropriate media agency partner.”For the quarter ending September 30, 2024, GCPL’s advertisement and publicity expenses saw a slight decline of 0.56percent, amounting to Rs 363.95 crore, compared to Rs 365.94 crore in the same period the previous year. The company’s total expenses for the fiscal year ending March 31, 2024, stood at Rs 1,335.89 crore. In terms of business performance, GCPL reported a 7percent growth in India sales and volume for Q2 FY 2025, although EBITDA remained flat.Commenting on the Q2 FY 2025 business results, Sudhir Sitapati, Managing Director and CEO of GCPL, had said, “GCPL has had a steady quarter despite facing challenges such as rising oil costs and subdued consumer demand in India. Our standalone business grew by 7percent in both volume and value, while reported EBITDA remained flat. Our EBITDA margin of 24.3percent is at the lower end of our target band, driven mainly by high palm oil inflation. The elevated prices, further compounded by the import duty on oil, have had a short-term impact, but we are confident that we will recover these margins through strategic price increases and cost stabilization.”He added, “Overall, we achieved 5percent organic UVG, 5percent organic USG, and 8percent reported EBITDA. The performance in Asia and the bottom-line growth in our international businesses have been particularly encouraging. Our portfolio’s strength is evident in the high-single-digit volume growth, especially during a period of low soap volume growth. Notably, Air Care, Laundry, Incense Sticks, and Sexual Wellness have continued to show strong growth. Our recent relaunch of Household Insecticides with the RNF molecule has shown promising results, particularly in incense sticks and coils, which were launched a few quarters ago. Moving forward, we are focused on driving further volume growth while navigating the volatility in palm oil prices over the coming quarters.”

Marketers are starting to pay closer attention to the inner workings of ad verification companies. In the past two years, this scrutiny has intensified, driven by a renewed emphasis on transparent media buying following audits that exposed the murky fate of ad dollars in the hands of ad tech intermediaries. Just this summer, marketers voiced their frustrations over ad verification companies’ failure to adequately address issues like ID spoofing and made-for-arbitrage sites – hot button topics that have dominated the conversation this year.

Mike Tasik, group media director of full-service agency Crispin, said his clients had begun raising questions more frequently “within the past couple of years,” beginning with the 2020 election, and increasing ahead of this year’s poll.

For years, question marks have loomed over these companies, but marketers largely stayed silent. The risks seemed too daunting, and the potential benefits too hazy. Now, however, the tide is turning.

The Department of Justice’s (DoJ) inquiries into the workings of Doubleverify and Integral Ad Science signal just how widespread these concerns have become in the industry.

Officials from the DoJ, according to Marketing Brew, spent time last month asking ad executives about the workings of Doubleverify and Integral Ad Science. The informal inquiries signal just how widespread these concerns have become in the industry.

The DoJ hasn’t publicly said why it’s interested in the work of DoubleVerify or IAS, and its press team didn’t respond to a request for comment. But given the conversations were “spurred,” by an August report from Adalytics that alleged recruitment ads for the U.S. Navy and National Guard were running on sanctioned Russian and Iranian websites, it’s likely that the DoJ’s lines of questioning were focused on the US government’s own $1.8 billion annual ad spend.

The DoJ’s queries were “hard to ignore,” Tasik said in an email.

Media lawyer Peter Jackson, a counsel at law firm Greenberg Glusker, told Digiday: “From the reporting, the inquiry seems to stem from the government’s own interest in ensuring its ads don’t run against objectionable content, as opposed to a broader inquiry into these services as a whole.”

A spokesperson for DoubleVerify confirmed that the firm had not been approached by the DoJ. “We maintain close, trusted and transparent relationships with our customers on brand safety and suitability,“ they said in an email. IAS did not respond to requests for comment by the time of publication.

Nonetheless, it’s clear that some of these relationships – and others across the industry – are undergoing a reassessment.

“Clients are asking better questions around brand safety as it relates to the vendors we use, what specific levers they’re pulling and how it fits into the overall media strategy,” said Tasik. He noted that marketers are often concerned with identifying benchmarks for viewability and dwell times on ads.

Examples of questions, according to Tim Haarmann, managing director, Media by Mother, included: “Are we using all the right tools? Are we using the tools to the best of their capabilities? Are we putting a human perspective on this?”

Jonathan D’Souza–Rauto, biddable product lead at Kepler, added that clients often ask whether vendors’ tech correctly flagged unsuitable, unsafe or fraudulent environments, and how they could avoid such issues without demonetizing news publishers that report on wars or crime.

What they do with these answers remains to be seen. Either way, the chances of them turning their backs on these ad verification tools is slim. Sure, they may be a bit blunt and imperfect, but they serve a precautionary purpose, and marketers haven’t faced any penalties for erring on the side of caution.

One brand marketer, who exchanged anonymity for candor, likened the use of third party vendors to “very expensive insurance.”

Unfortunately, that insurance hasn’t exactly offered peace of mind. According to Kepler’s D’Souza–Rauto, questions from “the more switched on brands” on how third-party tools actually work, whether their practices penalize news publishing and on viewability metrics are “definitely in conversation more now.”

This scrutiny has prompted marketers to adopt more sophisticated approaches to complement their existing ad verification provider, rather than replace them entirely. Think of it as an unbundling of ad verification.

According to performance marketing execs, that wouldn’t mean discarding third-party tools necessarily, but rather investing in the time required to better understand and interrogate them.

For Jay Friedman, president of Goodway Group, this would mean prioritizing inclusion lists over exclusion lists. According to Friedman, this would reduce concerns about over-active filters.

“That, in and of itself, allays a dramatic amount of [the] concerns,” he added. An inclusion-led approach to contextual advertising would support news publishers and journalism on the web, rather than using too-broad keyword blocklists that habitually wall off reporting on conflict and crime despite a lack of evidence that brands suffer from advertising against such content.

Pre-bid brand safety checks, industry experts said, are considered a more airtight means of ensuring an ad isn’t going to run somewhere it shouldn’t, because they flag unsuitable environments before a bid’s been made.

“From a pre-bid solution, IAS and DV are useful,” said the brand marketer. “You can identify inventory before we bid on it, whether it meets brand safety requirements, verification, fraud, viewability. Everything else is money wasted.”

For its part, DoubleVerify argues in favor of clients checking its workings. “We encourage advertisers to review our data independently to continually assess and enhance performance, recognizing that accountability strengthens results,” the firm’s spokesperson told Digiday.

Most of the above adjustments would require more time spent thinking about verification and brand safety by either marketers or their agencies – time and billable hours that not every client can spare. “I think a lot of companies think that holding them accountable is more trouble than it’s worth,” said Friedman.

At the end of the day, advertisers’ brand safety concerns pre-date the DoJ’s interest – and are larger than their reliance on just two companies. Perhaps the greater issue is the industry’s eagerness to embrace a quick-fix solution to a long-standing problem.

“We have certain clients that just believe you tick a box and it protects you, which I completely disagree with,” D’Souza-Rauto said. “Just because it’s there doesn’t mean it’s working. You still need a human approach to analyze and to do other things that the technology isn’t doing.”

— Kristina Monllos contributed to this report.

Hettich, a leader in innovative furniture fittings, has expanded the reach of its latest campaign, The Youngest Magician, to a wider audience through airport branding in partnership with Times Innovative Media Ltd. Running throughout September and October 2024, the campaign positions Hettich as a lifestyle brand that enables “Magical Interior Experiences.”
The campaign’s objective is to reinforce Hettich’s status as an ‘innovative brand’ by reshaping how furniture fittings are perceived, emphasizing their role in enhancing both the aesthetic and emotional aspects of living spaces.
Airports were strategically selected for location-based targeting to connect with national and international travelers from the NCCS A+ & A segments, passing through high-traffic airports across India. Hettich has chosen Mumbai International Airport, Kolkata Airport, and Indore Airport to demonstrate the transformative power of its fitting solutions and appliances, turning everyday moments into magical experiences.
These three airports play a crucial role in the campaign’s media strategy, ensuring maximum visibility to the brand’s desired audience. Mumbai Airport provides access to both global and national travelers, while Kolkata and Indore airports serve as key regional hubs, reaching affluent and aspirational travelers in their respective regions.
As part of its airport strategy, Hettich extends its mainline campaign with sophisticated imagery and dynamic execution, featuring the innocence of an 8-year-old boy who feels like a magician while interacting with Hettich products.
The campaign is displayed through a mix of large-format static visuals and digital walls positioned in high-dwell-time areas, such as near escalators and baggage claim belts, ensuring extensive exposure across all three airports.
The response has been overwhelmingly positive, with many travelers acknowledging Hettich’s strong presence. The campaign has effectively captured attention, elevating the brand’s visibility and emotional resonance.
“The airport strategy elevates the marketing initiative by reaching a diverse, premium audience. The brand appears larger than life with marquee advertising formats placed in high-visibility areas. With its stylish imagery and dynamic execution, the campaign enhances the brand’s aspirational appeal and showcases our commitment to improving lifestyles,” said Jiteen Aggarwal, CMO, Hettich.
“Airport advertising is the pinnacle of outdoor media for reaching a global audience, given the nature of airport operations. We are delighted to provide our clients access to a highly desirable audience, with extraordinary infrastructure and service. The Hettich campaign is a prime example of how outdoor advertising can help brands establish a remarkable presence across India’s leading airports,” said Sumit Chadha, Business Head – Airport & City Media, Times OOH.
Times OOH offers comprehensive media solutions across airports, metro stations, and street furniture in India and Mauritius.

By Delphin Varghese

As the era of third-party cookies almost came crumbling down, marketers encounter several challenges to cope up with this seismic shift, involving adapting to contemporary methods of targeting and measuring ads. However, the transition serves as an opportunity to leverage streaming and audio ads which are ballooning rapidly.

The Decline Of Third-Party Cookies How non-digital advertising is redefining brand engagement amid digital fatigue Driving consumer innovation through multi-model AI applications From data to Diwali deals: The power of data enrichment Can AI supercharge Performance Marketing without crossing ethical lines?

Google’s decision of almost eliminating third-party cookies, which for a very long time equipped marketers with the ability to track users, build user profiles and foster personalisation, is being met with significant resistance. On the other hand, Safari and Firefox have already phased out third-party cookies. As cookies fade away, advertisers need to pivot and shift their strategies to remain effective while ensuring privacy measures for consumers.

This transition does change the nature of traditional advertising but has opened doors towards streaming and audio channels which do not depend on cookies but integration of first-party data and contextual targeting. This increase in engagement is boosting these platforms including music streaming, podcasts and video on demand, among users and therefore represents valuable opportunities for advertisers to engage with their audience.

Streaming and Audio Ads – A New Horizon

Advertising opportunities are abundant with Streaming platforms like Spotify, YouTube and other video on demand services. Streaming and audio advertising can thrive in a post-cookie environment thanks to their ability to integrate highly engaging content, first-party data insights, and effective targeting options.

Improved Targeting of your Audience

In view of the absence of third-party cookies, first-party data and contextual targeting are both being used by advertisers in order to reach their audiences. Streaming and audio platforms are great in accumulating this kind of information as they have the profile of their users, their preferences and also their listening/viewing frequency. These data, which are sometimes not only sourced but also accurately sourced, have higher engagement compared to cookie based data.

Based on the playlists, streaming platforms are able to collect information like mp3’s location, age, musical tastes and even level of happiness. This offers advertisers an opportunity to target and send out very specific ads to participants. Not only can audio ads be targeted for specific audiences, they can also be attached to content which is an improvement from the conventional advertising model which has a singular target.

How Streaming Contextual Targeting is Breaking Through

Through contextual targeting, advertisers are able to integrate their message into the content that the consumers are currently engaging with. With the prohibition of third-party cookies, previous privacy limitations have now been predicted as contextual targeting has returned because it centers on the content instead of the user. In streaming, this could mean that ads are targeted alongside certain genres or categories of a video being played. In this case, a fitness wear company can have adverts of the workout playlists or exercise videos which act as relevant promotion tools without having to gather personal information.

The relevance creates a fluid experience for the users thus increasing the chances for them to the ads. In addition, contextual advertising in streaming enables brands to project their advertisements in a manner that resonates with the content, increasing all rounds – ad recall and effectiveness.

Leveraging the Power of Audio Ads in the Target Market

Audio can be said to have a competitive advantage especially in the context of advertisement with strong prospects in regard to expansion. The effort to consolidate focus among fans and viewers seems to be making an impact within the audio industry, especially through the use of podcasts. The attention of listeners comes hand in hand with strong indicators of effectiveness when it comes to conversion, which is a huge benefit.

Many podcast advertisements utilize a very interwoven format, called Host-Read Ads, that have both trustworthy influences and seamless integrations into the content. Furthermore, audio advertisements provide new platforms for creative storytelling where brands tell endearing stories. Compared to visual advertisements, audio ads reach out to audiences that cannot be targeted through gazing, for instance, exercises or busy schedules that come without any screen time.

Finding the Right Metrics in the Cookie-less Economy

It is an obvious fact that advertisers are turning towards other measures since there are no more cookies available. Stream metrics and audio ad metrics such as click through rates, engagement and completion are increasingly being viewed as core metrics of advertisement quality. There’s been a noticeable shift, whereby rather than solely time, attention metrics are being introduced that look at how long a given user stays engaged with any given content.

In regard to audio ads, brand lift studies can be seen as developing tools for measuring the level of brand awareness, as well as the perceptions amongst the audiences. Also, conversion rates in audio ads can be measured by the advertisers directly thanks to QR codes and custom URLs, which is a new way to connect offline and online activities.

Bracing For What Lies Ahead: Privacy-first Advertising

With the death of the cookie, the need for compliance advertising is at the forefront. More consumers are conscious of their privacy rights and expect brands to respect their privacy. The streaming and the audio platforms are the ones that have taken the front line in this, taking first party data, contextual marketing, and consent.

In readiness for this, advertisers cannot lack investing in creative approaches that enhance trust and transparency with consumers. With data ethics and compliance with privacy marketing, brands can create brand affinity with their audiences without indulging in stalking the users and tracking their moves without consent.

Now that third-party cookies might become a thing of the past, audio ads and streaming ads are best placed in the forefront of the digital ad space. Given their strength of using first party data, contextual marketing, and the ability to create compelling content, these platforms show how business will operate in a privacy centric world. By now, marketers should be welcoming the post-cookie world and these advances will forge stronger connections between brands and their audiences.

Verwende Untertitel in deinen Videos

Google bringt Ads in KI-Übersichten

Google is now testing AI Overviews for KP descriptions on mobile beyond the testing for animals and people. This test is now showing more broadly, with descriptions being re-written for topics instead of the standard website descriptions. More examples: https://t.co/cBbDuSx14J pic.twitter.com/9xWBJdrCKc— SERP Alert (@SERPalerts) September 16, 2024
